My Approach to
End-of-Life Care

A modern glass-paneled building facade reflecting a soft pink and gold sunset sky with light clouds across its grid of windows.

My approach is anchored in the belief that choice = dignity, and that every person deserves an end-of-life journey filled with authentic support. As a private end-of-life doula, I offer compassionate care, holistic guidance, and practical planning for individuals and loved ones of all backgrounds. While my practice warmly welcomes everyone, I specialize in providing safe, affirmative care for the queer community, honoring chosen families, identities, and unique legacies.I also offer specialized support for secular individuals and those following Earth-based spiritualities who seek deeply meaningful, values-aligned care.Whether navigating planning, legacy work, or a peaceful bedside presence, I am here to ensure your final chapter is lived entirely on your own terms.

About Me

Scott Burnam, founder and end-of-life doula at Reverent Ridge, smiling in a painted cap and glasses

Hi, I’m Scott (he/him). My work as an end-of-life doula began at the bedsides of the people I loved most, not in a classroom.Accompanying my mother and grandmother through their final days taught me the quiet power of planning ahead and having compassionate support close at hand.As an INELDA-trained doula and the founder of Reverent Ridge, I provide steady, non-medical care for individuals and families across Greater Phoenix and virtually nationwide.I’m a husband, a proud dad of three, a poet, and a photographer. I bring that same creative, attentive heart to my work at the bedside—listening deeply, honoring the small moments, and helping people author their final chapters with peace and dignity.

Trust & Standards

Frequently Asked Questions

What services does a death doula provide in Phoenix?

Reverent Ridge provides non-medical holistic support, including advance care planning, vigil planning, emotional companionship, and legacy work. Services are tailored for individuals and families navigating end-of-life transitions across Phoenix, Scottsdale, and the surrounding Valley area.

Who do you serve, and do you offer secular or LGBTQIA+-affirming care?

Reverent Ridge warmly welcomes individuals and families of all backgrounds, beliefs, and walks of life. My practice is completely faith-agnostic, honoring your personal worldview without imposing any religious or dogmatic agenda. I specialize in providing safe, affirmative care for the LGBTQIA+ community, honoring chosen families and personal identities. How does Reverent Ridge work alongside hospice teams?

A death doula complements medical hospice care by focusing on physical comfort, emotional support, and spiritual peace. While hospice medical staff manage medication and clinical care, Reverent Ridge provides continuous bedside presence, family respite, and personalized vigil support.

When is the best time to hire an end-of-life doula?

Support can begin at any stage of life or illness. Many families engage Reverent Ridge early for advance care planning and legacy projects, while others seek support during active hospice care or final vigil days.

Are death doula services covered by insurance or Medicare?

Because death doulas provide non-medical, holistic care, services are currently paid out-of-pocket and are not covered by Medicare or standard health insurance. Reverent Ridge offers transparent service packages and flexible arrangements to help families access the end-of-life support they need.
